Essential Functions:

The Educational Interpreter is a 12-month calendar year hourly position and is supervised and monitored by the Lead Educational Interpreter. The Educational Interpreter provides support for D/HH students based on their ITEP goals and/or diploma requirements in collaboration with the classroom teachers and other clinical team members. In addition, the Educational Interpreter will have a strong partnership with classroom faculty and clinical staff to support an individualized, evidence-based educational program considering each student's interests, strengths, and needs. The Educational Interpreter will provide communication access to D/HH students through the use of ASL and signed English.

  • Provide communication access through use of sign language (ASL), signed English, spoken English, cultural mediation, and knowledge of visual accessibility at the school.
  • Participate in training opportunities, workshops, and professional development for educational interpreters regarding educational settings, IEP involvement, new/specialized vocabulary, AAC use, deafblind and Deaf Disabled specialties, and music interpretation at the guidance of the Lead Educational Interpreter.
  • Advocate for additional services/accommodations/accessibility for D/HH, deafblind, and Deaf Disabled students as needed.
  • Periodically attend collaboration meetings regarding accessibility, accommodations, and curriculum with consulting teacher of the deaf, clinical staff, transitions team, and electives teachers.
  • Provide communication accessibility and interpreting services within academic settings, parent meetings, ITEP meetings, and institutional events for and between D/HH, deafblind, Deaf Disabled, and hearing students, staff, and parents.
  • Prepare for interpreting content by utilizing preparation time and materials provided including communicating/collaborating with colleagues and researching outside sources.
  • Communicate and document student progress with transdisciplinary team; participates in relevant transdisciplinary meetings regarding student progress.
  • Set up and adapt materials, equipment, and assistive devices for use by student(s) as directed including school emergency protocols.
  • Participate in ITEP meetings and district CSE meetings as a member of the educational team.
  • Prioritize work assignments appropriately; interpreting educational classroom content should be prioritized above all other interpreting situations/needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information; information is shared only on a relevant need-to-know basis with educational team.
  • Serve as a sign language model for D/HH, deafblind, and Deaf Disabled students who they work with; present content and intent of speaker at a language level most readily understood by the individual.
  • May participate in/interpret for crisis intervention and behavioral techniques as needed.
  • Use RID Code of Professional Conduct and EIPA Guidelines for Professional Conduct to guide professional and ethical decision-making.
  • Provide tutoring services to D/HH, deafblind, Deaf Disabled, and students such as preliminary exposure to content-specific vocabulary, reviewing essential concepts, and/or providing additional opportunities for guided practice.
  • Support social development by informally teaching conversational signs to teachers, staff, and peers.
  • Support the general safety, productiveness, and operations of the school within the boundaries of compensated working hours as long as said expectations do not interfere with the need for educational interpreting services.

Requirements:

Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 1 year interpreting experience with deaf/HoH population, preferably in a K-12 educational setting
  • Certificate of completion or equivalent from an accredited interpreter training program (ITP) is strongly preferred, though relevant experience with D/HH, deafblind, and Deaf Disabled students may be considered.
  • Preferably completed a supervised internship or practicum in an educational setting
  • Successful completion of the written portion of the RID (National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification exam OR successful completion of the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) with a score of 3.5 or higher is preferred

Skills & Abilities:

  • Fluency in ASL
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to accurately complete documentation and other administrative tasks
  • Familiarity with video conference platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and related applications
  • Ability to manage challenging physical and verbal behaviors
  • Skilled in crisis management/de-escalation involving children and adolescents with autism, MH conditions, and other co-occurring diagnoses
  • Ability to get TCIS trained and remain current on all assigned trainings

Physical Requirements/Demands:

A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice.

Work Environment:

We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
